In 1999, Tkachev was again elected to the State Duma, but in 2000 he moved to the post of governor of the Krasnodar Territory, collecting over 82% of the vote in the elections. The head of the region Tkachev remained until 2015, and on April 22, 2015 was appointed Minister of Agriculture of Russia. He resigned in 2018 after the election of Vladimir Putin for a new presidential term.
