The only son of Mikhail Fridman, the largest shareholder of Alfa Group and LetterOne, 18-year-old Alexander lives in England, completes his studies at the private school of Sevenoks and is already engaged in business. In April, he flew to Moscow to meet with partners, and in an interview with Forbes told about himself and his relationship with his father.

Business. The AFF Hookah company, created by Alexander with friends - Denis Antonov and Mikhail Fridman (father’s namesake), has been delivering steam cocktails to the Sixty restaurant since the end of April, next in line is “Aunt Motya” in Gorky Park and in Sokolniki. “As a lover of smoking a hookah, I talked with them for a long time,” he says about partners. “They are intelligent guys, they have been working in this field for ten years already.” The hookah business, he said, is attractive by its high margins, the absence of fixed costs, flexibility and low competition. “In my opinion, there are few institutions in Russia that can boast a synergy of good nutrition, a pleasant atmosphere and delicious steam hookah,” explains Alexander. At the start, the partners invested in the business "no more than 1.5 million rubles." “If you remember, my father washed the windows, and I washed the flasks,” the young businessman jokes.

Help father. “I never consult with my father on the subject of what to do, I have completely all my own. I think he is not even aware of what we are doing. If in the know, then only in general outlines. Where, with whom and what the volume of investment, he does not know. For example, we agreed to supply hookahs to Alfa Future People, which Dad, I think, also does not know. We did not discuss this with him. And I will never go out of principle to ask him for money - I already have more opportunities at the start due to education and connections. Going to the father would be humiliating. I always managed to find the funds for some of my ideas. ” Alexander practically does not work with the structures of his father, his event-agency “Artist Bank” (a joint project with DJ Smash) only once organized an event for a small division of Alfa Group.

Relationship in the family. “They definitely didn’t indulge me, brought me up very modestly, never gave me any money. I was instilled a feeling of hunger, from where there was a desire to do something, try to do something myself, earn money. My father had one requirement for me - it was study, everything else was not so important for him. ” Sasha felt independent at the age of 13, when he began life in Sevenoks boarding school. He calls his relationship with his parents “partner-business”: “I cannot say that I am bathing in affection and warmth, but it helps me in business.”

London. “Life in London helps to think widely: you see the Western mentality, you see the Russian one and you can more finely adjust to people. It helps to achieve successful results in negotiations. My parents tried to create an international community for me as much as possible, for which I am grateful. ”

Moving to New York. In September, Alexander will begin studying at the Stern Business School. “The most important thing in university education for me is communication. I agree with my father that entrepreneurial ability is an innate quality. Stern will help me gain fundamental knowledge, and I like that he is in New York. I did not go to Yale because I want to have connections not only at the university, but also in the city — internal and external relations. In New York, I will watch some new projects. Hookahs are just the beginning. Rather, hookahs - this is a step forward, before that I was engaged in bars. For me, this is a way to earn start-up capital.
